RIVA RIVALE – FIRST TIME EVER IN THE UK

It is generally agreed that the Riva Rivale is one of the most ravishing powerboats ever made.  It simply oozes class from every pore.  This is the Bentley of the sea, distinguished, unmistakable, sporty (it will do 40 knots) impeccably tasteful, blissfully quiet, superbly built, finished to perfection, and so beautiful that onlookers’ jaws drop wherever it goes.

Now, for the very first time, the Brits can see the Rivale on their home turf, as this Italian superstar makes its UK debut at the London Boat Show, ExCeL, 8-17 January 2010.

For anyone who has their heart set on a 50ft GT powerboat, there is simply nothing better.  Owning a Rivale is a joy like no other, from the smile that creeps across your face every time you set eyes on it, to the grin from ear to ear when you hit the throttles and surge forward with no more than a purposeful hum from the 1800hp under the hood. In fact, so quiet is the Rivale that, with only minor modifications to her exhaust and engine-room soundproofing, she became one of a very select few powerboats to pass the strict regulations for use on the Swiss lakes.  Travelling at 37 knots, she registered just 72dBA.

That’s the same as inside the cabin of one of the quieter commercial jets flying at cruising speed.  And that was the volume outside the Rivale. To those on board, it’s even quieter.

To put that in perspective, the vast majority of powerboats this size would struggle to register under 80dBA at a mere 30 knots. It’s a clue to the extraordinary refinement of the Rivale – indeed of every boat that Riva produces.  From the engineering and build quality, to the styling, design, furnishings and finishes, perfection is Riva’s hallmark.  Ever since Carlo Riva embarked on his mission over 50 years ago to create the finest motor boats in the world, Riva has never been bettered. In the days when Rivas were crafted from wood, the planking for the hull was selected so meticulously to get a perfectly matched grain that it was virtually impossible to see the joins on the finished boat. Today, even though modern methods and modern materials have replaced the old traditions, it is still that uncompromising determination to be the best that separates a Riva from anything else.

A leading motorboating magazine described it as “an obsessive attitude toward quality that few other boatyards share”.

From the Rivale’s sublime profile with its huge open cockpit, you’d hardly credit that she also has a beautifully appointed interior down below.  As well as a dining saloon and galley, she has three sleeping cabins for up to six people.  The design of the Rivale’s interior is simply exquisite, in that cool, clean, bright, uncluttered way that the Italians do so well. Like a beautiful sculpture, it’s a harmonious symphony of contours, tones and textures, every bit as elegant as the exterior.  And then there’s the other side of the Rivale, the fun side. Because, in addition to all that style and glamour, this is a boat that loves to be driven, and which everyone wants to drive.  Sprinting along the coast, she handles like a sportscar: instant response, rock steady in the turns, and with plenty of power in reserve. Head out into open water, and switch to autopilot for a three-hour, 100 mile passage, and she settles smoothly into the cruise like a Continental GT eating up the miles on the autostrade.  This is motorboating royalty, and no mistake.

The Riva Rivale will be on Ventura’s stand, S070, adjacent to door S8, at the London International Boat Show, ExCeL, 8-17 January 2010.
